    Executive Director California Privacy Protection Agency

    Ashkan Soltani is the Executive Director of the California Privacy Protection Agency. He previously served as Senior Advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer in the U.S. White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under the Obama Administration, and as the Chief Technologist for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, where he helped establish the agency’s Office of Technology Research and Investigation.

    Byron Tau is an investigative and enterprise journalist who specializes in law, courts, and national security. Over the course of more than 15 years in Washington, Byron has covered all three branches of the federal government. He’s the author of the recently released book “Means of Control” about how consumer data is increasingly being repurposed for government surveillance.

    Yashina Burns is the VP of Legal and Privacy at DeepIntent, the advertising technology company built purposefully for the healthcare industry. In her role, Yashina provides strategic counseling on complex legal and compliance issues concerning digital advertising. Prior to her work at DeepIntent, she advised technology startups on various matters ranging from company formation to IP protection and privacy. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Law, Societies, & Justice from the University of Washington and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Irvine School of Law.

    Aaron Burstein, Partner, helps clients address, prevent, and resolve complex legal issues related to privacy, data security, and consumer protection. Aaron is exceptionally well-versed on the evolving privacy laws and regulations at the federal and state level and advises clients on compliance and risk management. Before entering private practice, Aaron served as an attorney in the FTC’s Division of Privacy and Identity Protection and as a senior legal advisor to Commissioner Julie Brill.

    Kashif T. Chand is the Chief of the New Jersey Division of Law’s Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Section, providing legal counsel and representation to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and other state agencies. Deputy Attorneys General within the section aggressively investigate matters impacting consumers, focusing primarily on the security and use of personal, health, and financial data. Deputies further evaluate the business practices of technology platforms in response to the ever-evolving threats to consumer privacy and safety. Since joining the section in 2019, the section has resolved several notable data privacy investigations into Wawa Inc., Weichert Co., Wakefern Food Corp., Google, and Morgan Stanley, among others.

    Alan Chapell has worked with dozens of premium adtech and martech companies as an outside counsel and privacy advisor. Alan began his career at a boutique direct marketing agency in Connecticut. In 1996, he founded the privacy program at Jupiter Research, an Internet research firm. After, Alan helped develop DoubleClick’s research product suite and founded Chapell & Associates in October of 2003.

  • Julie Karasik

    Director, Technology & Product The NAI

    As the Director, Technology & Product at the NAI, Julie is responsible for the NAI/DAA central opt out, and has worked on several of its major upgrades. She works with member companies to onboard them to the opt out tool and diagnose problems if they arise. She lead the development and launch of the NAI email based (AMA) opt out. She also participates in several industry efforts collaborating on a post-cookie future in online advertising. Her background includes coding, managing servers, databases, and directing web design and development. Julie received a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University, where she was pre-med before deciding to pursue her interest in technology. She grew up in NYC, and is based in San Francisco.

Michele is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)/ U.S. She received her B.A. from Loyola University in Maryland and her J.D. from Quinnipiac University School of Law.

    Founder and Chief Scientist Tumult Labs

    Ashwin Machanavajjhala, Tumult founder and Chief Scientist, and Associate Professor at Duke University, is recognized for his pioneering and award-winning research in differential privacy. He is credited with leading the first real-world deployment of differential privacy at the US Census Bureau in 2008.

  • Aaron Massey

    Senior Policy Analyst The Future of Privacy Forum

    Dr. Aaron Massey joined FPF in August 2022 as Technologist and Senior Policy Analyst for Advertising Technologies and Platforms where he leads FPF's Ad Practices Working Group. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). His academic research focused on computer security, privacy, software engineering, and regulatory compliance in software systems. Aaron is a recipient of the Walter H. Wilkinson Graduate Research Ethics Fellowship and a recipient of a Google Policy Fellowship. Before UMBC, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Georgia Tech’s School of Interactive Computing. Aaron earned a PhD and MS in Computer Science from North Carolina State University and a BS in Computer Engineering from Purdue University.

Anthony also oversees the drafting of updates to the NAI Code of Conduct and Guidance Documents, along with the NAI Board of Directors, culminating most recently in the publication of the 2020 NAI Code of Conduct.

Before joining the FTC, Ronnie practiced in the litigation group at Fenwick & West in San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

As an innovator, she authored and has been granted three patents related to device level age assurance for the protection of vulnerable populations. Denise co-founded PRIVO in early 2001, inspired by the opportunities and challenges of implementing the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
